Development of the SCHEMA Coaching Approach Integrating Schema Theory and ICF Core Coaching Competencies

초록

This study proposes a systematic schema coaching approach to effectively address clients' repetitive and deeply rooted difficulties in coaching settings. To achieve this, schema theory was examined and integrated with the International Coaching Federation’s (ICF) core coaching competencies to construct a coherent and practice-oriented coaching framework. This study employed a conceptual literature review to establish criteria for literature selection and conceptual analysis, thereby deriving the rationale for theoretical integration. As a result, the SCHEMA coaching approach was derived, consisting of six stages: S (Schema and pattern awareness), C (Cognitive restructuring of maladaptive beliefs), H (Habits reformation), E (Emotional connection and acceptance), M (Monitoring the change process), and A (Action-driven goal execution). Each stage specifies its core focus and related coaching competencies to support integrated cognitive, emotional, and behavioral change. This study presents an integrated process aligned with the ICF core competencies and provides a theoretical framework applicable to coaching education and practice.
