한국의 국가-자연 연구 12년, 평가와 전망

초록

Korean social science, within the context of East Asian developmentalism, has focused on the role of a strong state in explaining South Korea's modernization, urbanization, and industrialization. However, the dominant perspective in existing studies has paid little attention to how the resources required for the processes of modernization, urbanization, and industrialization were transformed from nature. The concept of "state-nature", introduced to the field of geography in Korea twelve years ago, was devised to elucidate how the state institutionally, discursively, and materially produces nature in the form of state-nature. Thus, over the past 12 years, theoretical and case studies on the concept of state-nature have been steadily accumulated in the domestic academic community. This study aims to critically evaluate the accumulated research on state-nature thus far and propose future research directions. The evaluation is divided into three major aspects. First, it surveys the spatiotemporal scope of the research achievements on state-nature. Next, it examines the influence of more-than-human geography on the concept of state-nature. Finally, it discusses misinterpretations of the state in subsequent studies that have adopted or criticized the concept of state-nature and proposes directions for improvement.
