초록
This study investigates the cinematic adaptation of The Message, originally a spy novel authored by Mai Jia (麥家), with a particular focus on the interplay between literary fidelity and cinematic reinterpretation. Drawing upon Fidelity Theory and Anti-fidelity Theory as its theoretical foundation, the paper explores how the film adaptation both inherits and reconfigures the thematic core, narrative structure, and character portrayal of the original text. While the novel unfolds through a multi-perspective narrative that foregrounds historical ambiguity and psychological tension, the film adopts a more linear and visually immediate structure aimed at heightening dramatic tension and audience engagement. This shift underscores the essential dynamics of intermedial translation, wherein the adaptation process becomes a site of both constraint and creative potential. By critically analyzing The Message as a representative case, this research argues that spy fiction film adaptations are not merely acts of textual transposition but constitute independent aesthetic enterprises. Furthermore, the study suggests that future adaptations should seek a more balanced integration of literary depth and cinematic efficacy, thereby enriching the artistic discourse of the spy genre.
