A Study on the Factors Influencing Repeated Victimization of Cyberbullying: Focused on the Lifestyle-Routine Activities Theory

초록

As the online environment becomes more active, adolescent cyberbullying victimization has emerged as a significant social issue. In particular, cyberbullying can hinder the healthy development of adolescents, as its impact is not merely a one-time occurrence but can involve repeated and persistent victimization of specific individuals. Therefore, this study aims to explore the factors influencing repeated cyberbullying victimization among adolescents. To achieve this, the study adopts the Lifestyle-Routine Activities Theory as its theoretical foundation, focusing on three key sub-factors: exposure, target’s attractiveness, and guardianship. It examines how these individual factors influence the likelihood of experiencing repeated cyberbullying victimization. For the analysis, this study utilizes data from the "2023 Cyber Violence Survey" conducted by the Korea Intelligence and Information Society Agency. The analysis is based on a sample of 3,379 adolescents who reported experiencing cyberbullying victimization. The findings indicate that gender, age, and academic performance—set as control variables—had significant effects. Additionally, the lifestyle-routine activities factors, namely online risk behaviors and school supervision, were found to significantly predict the likelihood of repeated cyberbullying victimization. Specifically, an increase in online risk behaviors was associated with a higher likelihood of repeated victimization, whereas a higher level of school and teacher supervision was linked to a lower likelihood of victimization. This study contributes to the existing literature by extending the discussion of repeated victimization, which has traditionally focused on offline experiences, to the realm of adolescent cyberbullying victimization. Furthermore, it highlights the necessity of strengthening protective functions at the school level and emphasizes the importance of preventive education on online risk behaviors to mitigate the risk of repeated victimization.
