초록

The understanding of Yegyeongjebulga begins with a precise interpretation of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra Yegyeongjeburwon and Choehaenggwi’s Yegyeongjebulsong. Some of the widely used interpretations in academia contain inaccurate modern translations; therefore, this paper proposes new translations of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra Yegyeongjeburwon and Choehaenggwi’s Yegyeongjebulsong, offering doctrinal commentary on passages directly related to Hyangga. In the case of Yegyeongjebulga, the discussion omits fully deciphered forms and focuses only on those that remain contentious. In the third line, ‘拜內乎隱 身萬隱,’ the element ‘-sap-’ is understood to be omitted, and through ‘乎,’ it is analyzed that ‘body (身)’ is not the subject of the embedded phrase but an adverbial element, implying the meaning of ‘bowing with the body.’ In the fourth line, ‘去良,’ should be read as [geoa], not [geora], and while grammatically it belongs to declarative form, it can serve an indirect command, as discussed in the background materials in classical Chinese. In modern language, it translates to “You should” or “It is proper for you to do so.” The sixth line’s ‘邀理’ is corrected from its erroneous meaning of ‘to be correct, to welcome, or to serve,’ and it is shown that it should be interpreted as ‘to meet or encounter.’ The eighth line’s ‘齊’ is interpreted as an expression of certainty and will, and it can be translated into modern language as “must” or “It’s necessary to.” Finally, in the tenth line, ‘叱等耶’ is treated as an earlier form of Middle Korean ‘ttanyeo’, and through examples of phonetic glossing, it is demonstrated that during the Goryeo period, ‘ttanyeo’ could be used in contexts other than the classical “況(much less)” phrase. It is suggested that this could be translated as “It’s only natural that~” or “It’s only right that~”
