세대 간 트라우마의 순환과 상징적 서사 구조의 기후 연극 연구: 앤드류 보벨 作 『비가 그칠 때』의 헨리 로우를 중심으로

This study examines When the Rain Stops Falling by Andrew Bovell, analyzing the character Henry Law as an individual exhibiting a sexual paraphilia—specifically pedophilia—based on the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed.). It explores how his pathological traits initiate and expand the intergenerational trauma narrative that structures the play. Spanning a non linear timeline from 1959 to 2039, the work portrays guilt, disconnection, and recurring suffering across four generations, with Henry Law positioned as the central figure who triggers this tragic cycle. Rather than viewing Henry’s actions merely as moral deviance or personal deficiency, this study considers his pathology as a narrative force that intensifies familial collapse and emotional rupture. Focusing on his backstory, it analyzes how his inner anxiety and guilt interact with the play’s sym bolic narrative structure to shape the structural transmission of intergenerational trauma. Recurrent motifs such as rain and fish soup signify psychological instability and the impossibility of reconcilia tion, while the nonlinear structure renders generational connection and disconnection visible. Through the interplay of symbolism and narrative form, this study clarifies how Bovell represents in ner human suffering and the inheritance of trauma across generations. The analysis is further connected to role-creation work conducted within an M.F.A. project-based performance process. However, this paper concentrates on the analytical stage preceding perform ance, emphasizing interpretation of the character’s psychological structure and narrative function rather than physical or expressive realization on stage. Ultimately, the study aims to demonstrate how Henry Law’s pathological traits operate as an interpretive foundation in the initial phase of acting creation.
