The Construction Period of the Rock-Carved Buddist Bell in Seoksu-dong, Anyang and the Characteristics of the Monk Statue

초록

The rock-carved Buddhist bell located in Seoksu-dong, Anyang is thought to bemodeled Goryeo Buddhist bell from the late 11th century, judging by its invertedU-shaped dragon hook and four striking points with 12-lobed lotus plates. The bellmost similar to the Anyang Seoksu-dong rock-carved bell is the Yongjusa templebell. It appears the sculptor who carved the rock-carved bell used the Anyangsatemple bell, or bells from nearby temples, which display the style of the late 11thcentury, as a model. The monk statue on the rock-carved bell was thought to berelated to bell striking. However, judging from the frontal view and the woodenhammer’s position not facing the striking point, it is believed that the monk wasrelated to the rock-carved bell or temple bell project at Anyangsa temple in themid-to-late 11th century.
