현대미술의 작품에 표현된 <매끈한 공간> 개념 연구 -질리언 웨어링, 카라 워커, 사라 루카스의 작품을 중심으로-

초록

This study seeks to explore the artistic practices of three renowned contemporary artists—Gillian Wearing, Kara Walker, and Sarah Lucas—who have shaped their artistic worlds through gendered and female perspectives through the framework of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s theory of smooth and striated spaces. It proposes new roles and directions for contemporary art that resonate with our time. According to Deleuze and Guattari, space is divided into striated space, bound by institutional hierarchies, and smooth space, which opens pathways to freedom and possibility. Throughout art history, contemporary art has opposed established hierarchies, forging a history of liberation and evolving as a vivid site of deterritorialization. Based on the concept of smooth space, this study examines how the artists navigate a transition from striated to smooth spaces within their works, employing formal analysis and in-depth exploration of content. In particular, the study examines the aesthetic methodologies through which these artists resist deeply rooted stereotypes around gender, race, and the body, and explore ways of deterritorializing a world shaped by hatred. The research highlights their defiance of cultural hierarchies and the narratives they weave as they redefine the landscape of contemporary art. In doing so, it affirms the value of collaborative and resistant artistic approaches in shaping cultural discourse. Though the three artists—born in the 1960s—differ in regional backgrounds and formal approaches, they share a common vision: breaking down fixed boundaries of history and culture to offer new perspectives for the future. Based on this context, the study engages with the voices of these artists as they advocate for smooth space, and presents their practices as a compass for freedom and liberation in a time marked by alienation and hate.
