초록
Online vigilantism has become a widespread phenomenon in Korea, raising significant concerns due to its potential to harm innocent individuals. Defined as the punishment of others by individuals or groups without legal procedures, online vigilantism requires a deeper understanding and effective countermeasures. This study examines the psychosocial factors influencing participation in online vigilantism, focusing on the fragmented nature of online environments. A survey of 1,000 Korean adults revealed that higher levels of schadenfreude and moral grandstanding were associated with increased participation in online vigilantism, while a stronger belief in distributive fairness within just-world beliefs reduced participation. Age also emerged as a key factor influencing experiences of online vigilantism. Additionally, just-world beliefs were found to indirectly affect participation through moral display as a mediating factor. The findings suggest that participation in online vigilantism is more driven by personal desires than moral convictions. These insights contribute to understanding the motivations behind online vigilantism and developing strategies to address its social impact.
