초록
This study examines the life and thought of Ven. Haean (海眼, 1901–1974) and analyzes his doctrine of non-self (anattā) as articulated in the Haean-jip (海眼集), a collection of his Dharma talks and scriptural commentaries. Throughout his life, Haean consistently emphasized “seven-day intensive meditation” (chil-il jeongjin) and, through his interpretations of various scriptures and meditation methods, urged the dismantling of self-attachment and the realization of non-self in daily life. Nevertheless, his thought and practice have remained largely unexamined in existing scholarship. This study therefore systematically investigates Haean’s understanding of non-self based on the Haean-jip and compares it with contemporary psychological theories of the self and mindfulness-based therapeutic approaches. In his scriptural exegesis, Haean repeatedly stressed the importance of non-self, while his model of seven-day intensive practice highlighted the radical dismantling of self-attachment and the embodiment of insight in everyday conduct. Such perspectives resonate with modern psychology’s concept of decentering, the relational self in self-psychology, and the principle of non-judgmental acceptance central to mindfulness. In particular, Haean’s seven-day intensive meditation, which emphasizes extreme immersion and breakthrough within a short time span, stands in contrast to the gradual and structured formats of MBSR and MBCT, yet may serve as a deepening or complementary model for contemporary mindfulness programs.
