Satellite Office: A Conceptual Definition and a Theoretical Framework

초록

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, satellite offices have become a prominent feature of the large conglomerate landscape in South Korea. Despite their growth, a holistic understanding of these hybrid workspaces has been hindered by conflicting stakeholder (i.e., employers, managers, and subordinates) perspectives, inconsistent terminology, and disciplinary fragmentation. This study defines the satellite office as a technology-enabled, decentralized workspace situated near residential areas to reduce commuting strain. We propose a comprehensive conceptual framework illustrating how spatial attributes impact employee attitudes and experiences through social and organizational behavioral mechanisms. By synthesizing Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory, Conservation of Resources theory, and Boundary Theory, the paper explains the interplay between spatial environments and individual resource building. Ultimately, this research clarifies the conceptual boundaries of satellite offices, advances theoretical debates on hybrid work, and offers both a research agenda for future empirical studies and practical insights for organizational workspace design.
