Gender Role Attitudes and Unpaid Labor among Married Women: A Cognitive Dissonance Perspective

초록

Gender role attitudes among married women are known to have little significant effect on unpaid labor activities. This study aims to re-examine this finding and investigate whether signs of cognitive dissonance may emerge as a result. Analyzing data from the 2019 Korean Time Use Survey, the results indicate that married women with egalitarian gender role attitudes: 1) performed more unpaid labor, 2) were more likely to experience negative feelings toward unpaid labor, and 3) reported lower satisfaction with household labor division. These findings suggest that wives with egalitarian gender role attitudes are unable to fully express their beliefs through their behavior, leading to internal inconsistency and psychological tension. Considering the psychological tension they experience, the low explanatory power of gender role attitudes can be interpreted not merely as a lack of influence or measurement error, but as arising from suppression based on traditional gender role norms. If such cognitive dissonance and internal conflict remain unresolved and persist, they may negatively affect decision-making regarding marriage and childbearing.
