A Study on the Ding-shaped incense burners and Beast-shaped Cannon housed in Incheon Metropolitan City Museum

초록

The ding-shaped incense burners and the beast-shaped cannnon housed in Incheon Metropolitan City Museum were transferred to museum in 1946 by the first director, Lee Gyeong-seong, with the cooperation of the U.S. Military Government. There are two ding-shaped incense burners, one with a full shape and the other with a damaged ear. The usage of the ding based on the three feet and the two years changed to an incense burner starting in the Song dynasty. The size of ding-shaped incense burner used indoors became large, reaching 60cm in the Yuan dynasty. Coming to Ming dynasty, large-sized ding-shaped incense burners were installed in front of temple buildings. The ding-shaped incense burners installed in front of Tianhuangdian hall and Daxiongbaodian hall of Fahaisi(法海寺) in Beijing can be said to be representative examples. The installation of incense burners continued into the Qing dynasty and were installed not only in temples but also in imperial palaces, ceremonies, and tombs. Among the ding-shaped incense burners of the Ming and Qing dynasties, incense burner in front of temple buildings had the characteristic of recording the temple name and engraving patterns on the legs and body. On the other hand, the incense burners in front of palace buildings and ceremonial architectures had the characteristic of keeping the vessel type, the three legs and two ears. The temple name has not been confirmed for the ding-shaped incense burners housed in Incheon Metropolitan City Museum, and its shape is similar to the ding-shaped incense burner at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, China. Therefore, if these incense burners were transferred from Henan Province, it appears to be related to the Confucian architecture of Henan Province. The beast-shaped cannon combines a unique iconography with an animal face and human hands and feet. The beast applied to the cannon appears to be the face of an animal that shows strength and the hands and feet of a person, rather than a specific animal. According to the inscription engraved on the top of the cannon, it can be seen that this beast-shaped cannon was manufactured in the summer of 1861 in a Kaifeng in Henan Province. Judging from the casting lines on the cannon, it can be seen that this beast-shaped cannon was made using multiple casting molds. It is thought that this beast-shaped cannon was used for rituals or decorative cannon.
