The Impact of Chinese University Students’ Perceptions of Avatars in Online Learning on Avatar Likability and Learning Motivation

초록

With the rapid advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the acceleration of online education due to the COVID-19 pandemic, avatars have emerged as important mediators in virtual learning environments. This study examines how learners’ perceptions of avatar characteristics—anthropomorphism, professionalism, and teacher–student interaction—affect likability, and how likability in turn influences learning motivation. To this end, a survey was conducted with 454 university students enrolled at universities in China, and the research model was examined through regression analysis using SPSSbased on the collected data. The results show that all three avatar characteristics significantly and positively influence likability, which itself has a positive effect on learning motivation. These findings highlight the value of integrating psychological and emotional factors into avatar design and offer theoretical and practical implications for enhancing learner engagement and motivation in online education. The study offers both theoretical and practical implications for enhancing student engagement and motivation in remote learning environments.
