Differences in College Students’ Career-Related Perceptions According to Enrollment in a Micro-Degree Curriculum: A Focus on Job-seeking Anxiety, Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy, and Career Preparation Behaviors

초록

This study aimed to empirically examine whether differences exist in college students’ job-seeking anxiety, career decision-making self-efficacy, and career preparation behaviors according to their participation in a micro-degree curriculum. To this end, survey data from 239 students were analyzed by comparing differences between students who applied for a micro-degree program (n = 65) and those who did not (n = 174). The results indicated that, although the level of job-seeking anxiety was generally lower among students who applied for the micro-degree program than among non-applicants, the difference was not statistically significant. In contrast, students who applied for the micro-degree program showed significantly higher levels across all subdomains of career decision-making self-efficacy than their counterparts. In addition, applicants demonstrated significantly higher mean scores in exploration-oriented career preparation behaviors, such as consulting career professionals, visiting related institutions, and exploring employment conditions in fields of interest. These findings suggest that participation in a micro-degree program is more closely associated with strengthening cognitive and psychological resources-such as the capacity to actively explore, plan, and act on one’s career-than with the immediate reduction of emotional job-seeking anxiety. In this respect, micro-degree programs appear to function not merely as mechanisms for short-term employment outcomes, but as educational tools that promote career decision-making self-efficacy and self-directed career preparation behaviors among college students. This study contributes to the literature by empirically examining the effects of micro-degree programs from the perspective of college students’ career development.
