초록
The Korean community in Australia has developed and transformed through a diverse history of migration, spanning from the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War to the present day. Notably, beyond the arduous historical memories of the colonial era and liberation, various forms of migration have emerged―including international marriages and the adoption of war orphans after the Korean War, the re-migration of professionals and skilled workers originally dispatched abroad during Korea's industrialization ―such as personnel deployed to the Vietnam War, Korean miners dispatched to Germany, and Korean engineers sent to the Middle East―as well as investment migrants and international students heading to Australia. Following its formation, the Korean community in Australia has gradually established its cultural identity as a migrant society through the creation of diverse economic, social, and cultural communities and organizations. The founding of Korean-language newspapers, Korean schools, and literary associations was soon followed by the emergence of music and art groups, theater troupes, orchestras, traditional percussion ensembles, and tea ceremony societies―all serving as key venues for expressing the community's artistic creativity and sustaining its cultural identity. In particular, the spiritual and cultural values and worldviews reflected in Korean-language literary journals published in Australia (Hoju Hanin Munhak, Hoju Hanguk Munhak, Sydney Munhak and Sydneywa Munhak) symbolically reveal the cultural identity of the Korean diaspora in Australia. Through these publications, themes rooted in Korea's modern and contemporary history― such as realism and historical consciousness, centripetal and centrifugal forces, and the pursuit of decentered values―are explored alongside literary depictions of the Korean War and diaspora, the realities of the Vietnam War, issues of undocumented migration and racial discrimination, distorted sexual ethics, the contradictions of church culture, border consciousness and transgression, and the communion with nature and Indigenous spirituality. Taken collectively, these recurring motifs illuminate the evolving consciousness and cultural identity of the Korean community in Australia.
