Study on the Utilization of the 3-Act Structure Narrative Composition of New Media: YouTube Sketch Comedy, OTT Drama, Web Drama. Focusing on the Diversity of Running Time

초록

Since the arrival of the train, which is considered the beginning of film in 1895, until the 1990s when books on filmmaking were written in earnest, 100-minute or 120-minute video scenarios were divided into three acts and developed with Act 1 Composition Point 1, Act 2 Midpoint, Composition Point 2, Climax, and Act 3 as essential elements. However, after COVID-19 in the 2020s, with the decline of theater culture and the emergence of new media such as OTT, shorts, and reels, discussions on the expandability of scenarios classified as ‘series’ have increased, but there has been a lack of questions on whether web dramas, shorts, and reels, which are represented by short compositions, are still valid for the three-act composition. Therefore, this study, based on previous research and analysis of representative works by running time, examines whether the existing three-act composition is valid in narrative compositions with short dramatic compositions such as YouTube shorts, Instagram reels, TikTok, sketch comedy, and OTT-based web dramas. If valid, the purpose is to interpret what the minimum requirements are. The representative criteria for the work to be analyzed are video works with a dramatic composition (characters, events, background) of more than 3 minutes, and are limited to works that have recorded a break-even point of 10 billion theaters or more than 2.5 million viewers based on the number of views. The analysis will be divided into three stages for works that meet the requirements. The stages will analyze the narrative structure of short video works of 1) video scenarios of about 10 minutes, 2) video scenarios of about 20 minutes, and 3) video scenarios of about 30 minutes based on the running time. The goal of this study is to examine the variation method of the 3-act composition used in short running time video narratives and to diagram the development direction of modern video scenarios from the perspective of the creator. This study analyzes whether the three-act structure is still valid in new media narrative composition by referring to the narrative studies of classic writing books such as Sidefield’s What is a Scenario , Scenario Netsell Technique , and SAVE The CAT , and if it is valid, what are the essential components for a narrative composition that has been reduced from the existing 100-minute classic film writing composition to about 2-3 minutes. And finally, it describes the minimum establishment requirements of the detonator (composition point 1) located in the first act. The ultimate goal of this study is to study new writing methods for creators who are stepping into various media, and to analyze cases that utilize classic writing methods in new media and interpret what impact such cases had on the audience.
