해방 이후 불교교단의 분열과 재편 - 통합종단 출범을 중심으로 -

초록

This study examines the process of division and reorganization within the Korean Buddhist order after liberation, focusing on the establishment of the Unified Order. It first analyzes how the conflicts between celibate monks and married monks, the disorder in the administrative structure, and differences in ideology and precepts functioned as internal mechanisms of division. In addition to these internal factors, the study also investigates the external mechanism of political intervention by state power in shaping the division and unification of the Buddhist order after liberation. Furthermore, the divisions caused by these mechanisms are explored in the context of the con frontation between the Taego Headquarters of the Chosŏn Buddhist Jogye Order and the Chosŏn Buddhist Orthodoxy Head quarters. The significance of this study lies in its analysis that the Unified Order sought to reorganize the order’s structure through the establishment of a patriarch-centered system, the gradual resolution of the married monks’ issue, the communal manage ment of temple properties, and the institutionalization of mona stic education and ordination practices. Such reorganization carried dual significance: in the contemporary context, it repre sented an effort to overcome the legacies of Japanese coloni alism, while in the present context, it laid the foundation for the organizational framework of the current Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. For this purpose, the study examined prior research, along with institutional sources such as the Chosŏn Buddhist Constitution and the Buddhist Property Management Act, as well as modern Buddhist historical materials and contemporary press reports, in order to trace the driving forces behind division and unification. This methodology provided the basis for understanding the reorganization of the Buddhist order following the founding of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.
