Bridging Royal and Private Genealogies: Status and Representative Lineages of the Jeonju Yi Clan (全州李氏) in Late Joseon Composite Genealogies

초록

This study explores the intersection between royal genealogies and private lineage records in late Joseon Korea by examining how lineages of the Jeonju Yi clan (全州李氏) were represented in composite genealogies. Royal genealogies were official records compiled by the state and were restricted to a defined range of royal kin, whereas private genealogies were voluntarily produced within yangban (兩班, noble class) society. Despite this institutional distinction, descendants of the royal family were gradually incorporated into the broader elite lineage system after reaching the point of chinjin (親盡), the generational threshold at which royal status lapsed. This process fostered a continuous relationship between royal and private genealogical traditions. In this study, the Jeonju Yi clan is conceptualized as a broad descent-based collectivity, while individual branches descending from royal princes are treated as historically traceable lineages. Focusing on composite genealogies that transcend single surnames—such as Ssijok Wollyu (氏族源流), Gukjo Mungwa Seongbo (國朝文科姓譜), Jinsin Osebo (縉紳五世譜), Samban Sip-sebo (三班十世譜), and Uiyeokju Pal-sebo (醫譯籌八世譜)—this study analyzes how these lineages were selected, categorized, and incorporated into broader genealogical frameworks of the elite. Through comparative and quantitative analysis of lineage distribution, generational distance from royal ancestors, and patterns of inclusion, this study demonstrates that composite genealogies functioned as a “map of elite status,” reflecting shifting criteria for social recognition. While lineages closely connected to royal princes initially held prominence, the basis for inclusion gradually shifted toward contemporaneous figures distinguished by official careers and social standing. This transformation illustrates how royal bloodlines, once regarded as part of the sacred seongye (璿系, royal lineage), were gradually integrated into the evaluative framework of the yangban elite. By clarifying the distinction between clan and lineage, this study argues that royal and private genealogies did not operate as separate systems but were dynamically interconnected within broader mechanisms of social classification and elite reproduction in late Joseon society.
