The Effect of Human Capital of the Disabled on First Marriage Transition

초록

This study examines the characteristics that affect men and women with disabilities who became the disabled before adulthood to reach their first marriage. In particular, we would like to pay attention to whether human capital (educational attainment, occupational status, income, etc.), known as an important variable for the first marriage of the non-disabled, is the same for the disabled and whether these variables differ by gender. This study used panel data from the 1st to sixth rounds of the Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled(PSED) for analysis. The analysis targets consisted of people with physical disabilities, visual or hearing disabilities, and intellectual disabilities who were 18 or older and less than 65 years of age at the time of the first survey in 2016. As a result of the discrete-time event history analysis, it was found that the rate of first marriage transition varies depending on the human capital (educational attainment, employment status, and earned income) of the disabled, even when demographic characteristics, disability type, and degree of disability, and family background are controlled. The first marriage transition rate of high school graduates was lower than below middle school graduates or college graduates or higher. Higher education, similar to the pattern of non-disabled people, seems to act as a major direct and indirect resource for marriage. On the other hand, it is understood that low education increases the rate of first marriage transition by extending the marriage exposure period according to a short educational period and reducing the opportunity cost of marriage. Regarding employment status, the first marriage transition rate was high in the order of non-regular workers, regular workers, and unemployment. In a situation where economic resource acquisition is required for marriage, the low marriage transition rate of unemployed people seems to work similarly for the disabled. In addition, the phenomenon that non-regular workers have a higher marriage transition rate than regular workers is also found in non-disabled women. This phenomenon can be interpreted as a difference in opportunity costs and a strategic action to secure a stable economic foundation through marriage. This interpretation also applies to the inverse relationship between earned income level and the first marriage transition rate. The interaction effects of gender and the above human capital variables were insignificant. The reason might be that the gender division expected between non-disabled couples has become difficult to expect under the vulnerability of disability.
