초록
This study classifies the protagonists of 20 episodes in the Naver webtoon Change Me into growth narratives and catastrophe narratives, and analyzes readers’ emotional responses based on Honneth’s theory of recognition and Plutchik’s eight basic emotions. From 131,438 reader comments, character-mentioning comments were extracted for 22 characters (including 2 supporting characters), and a total of 8,500 comments were classified using an LLM (Gemini 2.0 Flash). Results show that trust is significantly higher in growth narratives while disgust is significantly higher in catastrophe narratives; together with joy and fear, four of eight emotions differ significantly between narrative types. The trust–disgust opposition corresponds most strongly to the growth–catastrophe divide, suggesting that readers’ emotional responses align with Honneth’s acceptance and withdrawal of recognition. Two independent human coders achieved near-perfect inter-coder agreement (κ = 0.888), and both showed substantial agreement with the LLM (mean κ = 0.717), confirming the reliability of the classification. These findings suggest that webtoon narratives function as social texts that mediate readers’ moral-emotional judgments about characters’ modes of seeking recognition.
