초록

This study empirically examines how individuals’ post-materialist orientations affect their attitudes toward immigration. While previous research has primarily explained attitudes toward immigration based on political ideology or economic interests, this study moves beyond such approaches to investigate how a fundamental value orientation—namely, the dichotomy between materialism and post-materialism—shapes individuals’ attitudes toward immigration. Post-materialism emphasizes non-material values such as autonomy, diversity, human rights, and social justice, leading individuals to prioritize freedom of expression and cultural inclusion over physical or economic security. Post-materialism tends to foster more inclusive attitudes by recognizing immigrants not as economic threats or outsiders, as rights-bearing individuals and valuable social assets. Based on this perspective, the study hypothesizes that post-materialists are more likely to hold positive attitudes toward immigration than materialists. Using data from the seventh wave of the World Values Survey (2017–2022), the empirical analysis reveals that post-materialist values significantly enhance positive attitudes toward immigration, especially in the socio-cultural dimension. These findings imply that policy efforts aimed at improving immigration receptiveness should be accompanied by structural strategies that foster civic value formation and long-term normative change.
