초록
This study explores the support practices of migrant-background Buddhist monks in South Korea, focusing on their role in multicultural society. Four monks from Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, each residing in Korea for over nine years and closely engaged with migrant communities, were selected for in-depth interviews using narrative inquiry, supported by phenomenological analysis. The findings show that their activities — such as medical interpretation, hospital accompaniment, legal counseling, and funeral services — extend beyond religious rituals and contribute to migrant settlement, autonomy, and emotional stability. These practices also foster the formation of multicultural Buddhist communities and networks of solidarity. However, challenges such as lack of space, limited funding, and weak institutional support remain. This study highlights their work as a public form of Buddhist compassion and suggests the need for policy frameworks that recognize and support these monks as key actors in social integration and multicultural engagement.
