초록
This study aims to verify the chronological attribution of the decorative painting (dancheong) patterns preserved in the inner wooden structure (Sokjip) of the Jeokmyeolbogung at Jungdae, Mt. Odaesan in Pyeongchang. The Sokjip retains the multi-bracket wooden architectural style typical of the early Joseon dynasty (15th century). The traces of dancheong remaining on the outer beams (oechulmok) of the Sokjip have been relatively well preserved due to the later construction of an outer structure (Geotjip), which protected them from external exposure, allowing the motifs to remain identifiable. The dancheong consists of two primary types of motifs: nokhwa-yeouidumun (green ruyi-head motif) and dulre-bangseok (framed medallion pattern) with a Linghua (rhombic floral) type design. The form, composition, coloring techniques, and color scheme of these motifs clearly reflect the stylistic characteristics of early Joseon-period dancheong. In particular, the use of the boneless technique (mollgolbeop), the green coloring applied to the upper structural elements, and the red highlighting of gong-an carvings are all typical features of early Joseon dancheong. Furthermore, newly discovered ink inscriptions (mukseo) on the outer rafter beam (oegidori), together with architectural characteristics, suggest that the Sokjip was built in 1468 (4th year of Seonghwa). This corresponds with the period when other major temples in the Mt. Odaesan area, such as Sangwonsa and Sajaram, were reconstructed under royal patronage. These historical circumstances provide important evidence for dating the dancheong of the Sokjip to the 15th century. The Sokjip dancheong represents a transitional case, in which motifs popular during the Goryeo dynasty were incorporated into the early Joseon decorative painting tradition. As such, it holds significant value in the history of Korean dancheong, both in terms of artistic style and academic significance. This study therefore provides important insights into the formation and development of early Joseon dancheong styles.
