Russian Election Interference in the 2016 US Election and the Voters’ Attitudes toward the Interference

초록

This paper explores Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election. Despite its significance, the Russian intervention has received little scholarly attention due to its complexity. This paper aims to fill this academic void through a n i n-depth case study and e mpirical examination of research questions related t o t he case. First, we analyzed t he Russian interference and how the US government responded to it by organizing them into three sections: e -mail hacking by Russians, alleged collusion between the Trump camp and Russia, and President Trump’s charges of o bstruction of justice. Then we addressed how Special Counsel Robert Mueller investigated these issues. In addition, this paper empirically examines how the partisan affection of American voters affects their attitudes toward the election intervention of Russia. We found t hat the party identification of voters and t he intensity of their partisan affection matter the difference in voters' attitudes toward the Russian intervention. Democrats tend to believe that the interference played a crucial role in Trump's win, while Republicans are more likely to understand that the Russian meddling was neither beneficial to Trump nor Hillary. We also found t hat Democrats are more likely to believe that there was inappropriate contact between the Trump camp and Russia, while Republicans are likely to believe that there was no such contact between the two.
