Violence Victimization among Young and Middle: Aged to Older Adults with Developmental Disabilities

초록

【Abstract】 This study examined factors associated with violence victimization among young and middle-aged to older adults with developmental disabilities, using data from the 2024 Survey on Work and Life of Persons with Developmental Disabilities (N=1,563). Violence victimization was assessed separately through self-reports, and logistic regression analyses were conducted with variables related to functional ability and health, family and peer relationships, social participation, and community environment. The analysis revealed that the rate of violence victimization was 15.34% among middle-aged and older adults with developmental disabilities, compared to 22.31% among young adults. Challenging behavior was a common risk factor across both age groups. Challenging behavior was identified as a common risk factor for both groups. In the middle-aged and older group, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), participation in leisure activities, and living conditions were identified as significant factors. These results indicate that violence against individuals with developmental disabilities occurs within an ecological structure where individual functional status and health interact with social relationships and the community environment. Therefore, the findings suggest a need for differentiated prevention strategies that reflect the life-cycle characteristics of persons with developmental disabilities, tailored approaches to addressing functional limitations and challenging behaviors, the strengthening of social support systems, and the establishment of community-based safety nets.
