초록
Although the tendency to perceive dating violence as a serious crime has increased compared to the past, non-physical forms of violence such as controlling behaviors, as well as cases involving male victims, continue to be perceived as relatively less serious. This study examined the effects of the victim’s gender and ambivalent sexism on the crime seriousness perception of dating violence, and investigated whether these perceptions could be moderated through the coercive control schema. A total of 183 adults participated in an online experiment. After completing a measure of ambivalent sexism, they were randomly assigned to one of four conditions in a 2 (victim gender: male vs. female) × 2 (coercive control explanation: absent vs. present) factorial design. Depending on the assigned condition, participants read dating violence scenario featuring either a male or female victim, and then assessed the seriousness of the case on a 7-point Likert scale. The results showed that when the same dating violence scenario was presented, participants rated the situation as less serious when the victim was male than when the victim was female. Moreover, higher levels of ambivalent sexism were associated with lower perceived seriousness of dating violence. The coercive control explanation, however, did not moderate the effects of victim gender or ambivalent sexism on perceived seriousness. The implications and limitations of the study are discussed, along with directions for future research on dating violence.
