A Long-term Analysis of the Basic Demographic Characteristics of News Media user Groups and the Characteristics of Media Use Behavior

초록

In this study, first, news media user groups were categorized, and second, the basic demographic characteristics and differences in media use behaviors between news media user groups were analyzed. We analyzed the data from the three-year “Korea Media Panel Survey (2019, 2021, 2023)” provided by the Korea Information Society Development Institute from a long-term perspective. The subjects of the analysis were set as those in their 20s or older, which is inferred to be the age group that regularly accesses news, and were classified into eight types based on news media use. In the three-year data, the “news non-user group”, who did not use the news at all, consistently existed at a rate of 15%-19.5%. The “news non-user group” consisted of more women than men, and the elderly (over 60) had a higher rate than the “2030s” and “4050s” groups. Most people had a college degree or higher in education, and their income level tended to be low. The “newspaper news user group” accounted for 38.1%-41.6% of the three-year period and women were more than twice , and the 2030s and 40s and 50s represented a higher percentage of users than those in their 60s and older. College graduates and above accounted for a significantly higher proportion of users with an education level. For television programs and OTT content, entertainment-focused genres such as “shows/entertainment,” “talk shows,” and “movies” were also primarily consumed. There was no gender difference in the “TV news user group,” and the “60s and older” age group was higher than other age groups. They tended to have lower education and income levels. They tended to be inactive in media and information use, and tended to perceive society through watching TV news. The ‘OTT news user group’ accounted for 1.2% in 2021 and 0.3% in 2023, representing a very small number of users who use news exclusively through OTT. There was no difference by gender, and the absolute number of users in terms of age, education level, income level, and household size was so small that there was no tendency to mention characteristics. Entertainment-oriented genres such as variety shows/dramas/movies were used through television and OTT. The “newspaper/TV news user group” can be seen as the most typical group in news usage. It is the user group with the highest share, accounting for around 30% for all three years. The proportion of “males” is approximately 1.5 times higher than that of females, and the proportion of those in their 40s and 50s is approximately 2.5 times higher than that of those in their 20s and 30s and those in their 60s and older. Those with a college degree or higher are 6-7 times more likely to use the service, and their income level is high. In terms of television programs and OTT usage, they are seen to use a wide range of information and entertainment genres, including current affairs/debates, dramas, shows/entertainment, and sports. The “newspaper/OTT news user group” accounts for less than 2% of users, primarily focusing on newspaper news. While there is no significant difference by gender, a slightly higher proportion of users are in their 40s and 50s, and those with a college degree or higher are more likely to consume news. There was no significant difference in income level. TV viewers prefer dramas and rarely consume any genre other than news on OTT. The “TVOTT news user group” showed a very low rate of 2.2% in 2021 and 1.1% in 2023. The male-female ratio was similar, and the rate increased slightly with age. High school graduates were relatively common. Even among television programs and OTT content users, usage of genres other than news was low, at less than 1%. The ‘newspaper, TV, and OTT news users’ group showed a high rate of simultaneous use of all news media, at 8.6% in 2021 and 4.3% in 2023. The rate was higher for men than for women, and the middle-aged group in their 40s and 50s showed a relatively high rate, followed by the elderly group in their 60s and above, which showed a relatively high rate compared to those in their 20s and 30s. The rate of ‘college graduates or higher’ was high, and the income level was high. TV program use was centered on news and current affairs reports/debates, and OTT content was mostly news, followed by entertainment/recreation.
