액자식 구성 영화에서 드러나는 다중 종교관 분석 : 대런 아로노프스키 <The Fountain>의 기독교관과 불교관을 중심으로

초록

Darren Aronofsky’s third feature film <The Fountain> is a framed film in which three narratives intersect in a nonlinear structure. The three narratives are divided into Spain in the past and space, which is inside story, and 21st century English culture, which is outside story. The difference from other framed films is that the main narrative is outside story, not inside story. And different religious views can be found in the two inside story. In the Spanish narrative revealed Christian elements by Genesis verses, and the space narrative revealed Buddhist elements by monk. In the 21st century English culture, which is a outside story and the main narrative, a doctor who develops a new drug for his wife, a cancer patient, appears. Wife writes a book, accepting the fact that she is dying. The doctor is developing new drugs to stop his wife's death. Spanish narratives feature queens and conquerors. They want eternal life. The conqueror succeeds in finding the tree of life in the desire to live forever with the queen, but after drinking the sap, he turns into a part of the tree of life. The space narrative is a world created by a doctor who lost his wife in the main narrative. The doctor, represented in the form of a monk, still denies death and believes in eternal life with human body. It is depicted as a process of searching for and wandering a star called ‘Sibalba’ in space. Most of characters in the movie want to enjoy eternal life with human body, but they all failed. Through them, the director wants to deliver a message that ‘death is not the end, and the way to eternal life.’ A unique framed structure and two religious views make the message clearer. It can be seen that Darren Aronofsky presented a new storytelling method.
