Re-examining Buddhism in Later Baekje

초록

Gyeonhwon, the founder of the Later Baekje Kingdom, supported the Namak school of Hwa’eom Buddhism, which embraced the thoughts of Wonhyo and Fazang alongside Uisang's Hwa’eom thought. He also rebuilt Geumsansa, which had a long tradition of Yogacara thought since the 7th century, and made it a royal temple. However, he had little connection with the practical beliefs and Seon Buddhism that had been popular in the area just before the founding of his kingdom. Several admired Seon Masters were present in the kingdom, but they received no interest or support from the government and relocated to other areas. The Namak school of Hwa’eom Buddhism and Yogacara thought were minor groups at the time but had been the major doctrinal Buddhism in Unified Silla, maintaining strong influence in Gyeongju, the capital of Silla. Despite founding a new dynasty and rejecting Silla, Gyeonhwon must have shared the same Buddhist thought as the Silla elite. In understanding Later Baekje Buddhism, scholars have emphasized the differences from Silla, but it is also necessary to recognize the commonalities and their background.
