The Impact of Living Alone among the Older Adults on Depression: The Mediating Effect of Multiple Forms of Experiences of Discrimination

초록

This study examined the impact of experiences of discrimination on depression among older adults living alone. We aimed to propose measures to reduce depression among older adults living alone by categorizing experiences of discrimination and verifying their impact on depression. Using data from the “2020 National Survey of the Elderly,” which included 3,137 older adults living alone, we classified experiences of discrimination as “Discrimination in public places,” “Workplace discrimination,” and “Discrimination within the family.” We validated mediating models for the relationship between older adults living alone and depression. The results showed that living alone had a significant direct effect on depression. “Discrimination in public places” and “Discrimination within the family” were significant mediators, with “Discrimination in public places” exhibiting the largest effect. However, “Workplace discrimination” did not mediate the relationship between living alone and depression. These findings suggest that promoting elder-friendly public spaces and supporting exclusive communities for older adults could mitigate discrimination and depression.
