A Study on the Role Analysis of ‘Pierre’ in Florian Zeller’s ≪La Mère≫

초록

Florian Zeller's 《La Mère》 unfolds through the perspective of the protagonist Anne, who suffers from Empty Nest Syndrome. Through the repetition of fragmented daily life and the reconstruction of characters, time, and space, the play allows "here and now" events to coexist with past memories and fantasies within the mother’s mind. In essence, it shapes a subjective viewpoint where the boundary between truth and illusion becomes blurred, much like infinitely overlapping mirror images. Thus, 《La Mère》 enables the audience to perceive the mother’s obsessive symptoms through her own gaze, leading them to understand her pain and contemplate the meaning of family. The purpose of this study is to provide analytical indicators to realize the thematic characteristics of the work, which lead to the audience's contemplation, through the character Pierre. To this end, the study interpreted and approached each Pierre reconstructed in every scene as a distinct individual with different objectives. However, it was found that the behavioral patterns revealed in the text alone had limitations in securing the internal validity required for actors to convincingly perform a character branching into different purposes. Consequently, Jean Baudrillard’s theory of simulacra was applied to derive objective characteristics for the branched character. Specifically, the Pierre reconstructed in each scene was interpreted as a simulacrum born through the process of simulation within the mother’s psychological world. Using the four stages of the simulacrum as the foundational basis for character analysis, the Pierre figures with similar objectives in each scene were categorized into four groups. As a result, the following were derived: (1) the husband leaving for a business trip for the family (a simulacrum character reflecting reality), (2) the husband neglecting the family due to work addiction (a simulacrum character where reality is distorted by the mother’s anxiety), (3) the husband using a business trip as a pretext for a hidden purpose (a simulacrum character where reality is concealed by the mother’s suspicion), and (4) the husband leaving for an affair with a young woman (a simulacrum character completely replaced by and newly generated from the mother's suspicion, independent of reality). In conclusion, by deriving these four simulacrum characters from the branching Pierre, this study suggested the practical possibility of performance to induce cognitive confusion in the audience by intentionally crossing these categorized types in each scene. This role analysis from the perspective of simulacra is expected to serve as a practical indicator for actors to logically perform the multi-layered identities of a character within a non-linear narrative structure.
