Strategies for Enhancing Reader Acceptance of Korean Literary Works: A Comparative Analysis of Original and Translated Book Covers

초록

One of the strategies that has enabled the rapid growth of Korean literary works overseas since 2016 is enhancing the reader accessibility of translated Korean literary works. Specifically, this involves selecting books with themes preferred by overseas readers for translation or redesigning the front covers of translated books to match those themes. This study examines how the front covers of Korean literary works, which have been well-received by Anglo-American readers, differ from the originals. To conduct this analysis, a list of "popular Korean literature" was extracted from Goodreads, the largest book review site, focusing on translations published after 2016, when Korean literature began to gain traction internationally. Anglo-American readers particularly favor crime and thriller novels, healing novels, and feminist novels. The corresponding strategies for designing the front covers of translated books include: 1) clearly conveying the book's theme, 2) enhancing visual appeal, and 3) fostering empathy. Given the rapid growth of the Korean cultural content industry, including literature, it is essential to expand discussions on front cover design strategies that significantly impact reader acceptance.
