초록
This study examined the effects of a short-term intensive Ganhwa Seon meditation retreat on practitioners' psychophysiological indicators, focusing on mindfulness levels and EEG-based neurophysiological measures. Participants engaged in a 5-night, 6-day Ganhwa Seon intensive retreat, and data were collected using a pre-post comparison design. Psychological indicators were assessed using the Korean version of the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (K-MAAS), while physiological indicators were evaluated with NeuroHarmony-based EEG measurements, including attention, activation, emotional index, anti-stress index, and overall brain index. The results indicated that even short-term intensive practice led to a significant increase in mindfulness. EEG measures also showed positive changes, such as increased basic rhythms and activation in the left hemisphere, as well as improvements in attention, emotional index, and anti-stress index. These findings suggest that Ganhwa Seon practice effectively enhances awareness of the present moment, alleviates emotional tension and stress responses, and promotes neural stability. However, no statistically significant changes were observed in right hemisphere activation or self-regulation indices, raising the possibility that the effects of the practice may be localized to specific brain regions. This study suggests the potential for Ganhwa Seon to be extended beyond its traditional religious framework as a contemplative tool for enhancing psychological awareness and emotional regulation in modern contexts.
