Among the Goguryeo diaspora who rose to high positions during the Tang Dynasty, no one entered the core of power and wielded real authority like Wang Maozhong. This was possible because he served as Xuanzong(Li Longji)’s closest bodyguard and made significant contributions during the two coups led by Xuanzong. Subsequently, he rose to become the most powerful figure based on his influence over the Northern Command, which played a decisive role in the coups, to the point where even members of the royal family and eunuchs feared him. However, at the height of his power, Wang Maozhong gradually became arrogant. Seizing this opportunity, the eunuchs launched a counterattack, and Wang Maozhong ultimately lost the power struggle and was executed. In addition to Wang Maozhong, five members of the Goguryeo diaspora from the Northern Command participated in Xuanzong’s first coup. Newly excavated tomb epitaphs reveal that some of them also took part in the second coup. This suggests the possibility that more Goguryeo diaspora members were part of the Northern Command, even though they do not appear in the records. It is reasonable to assume that Wang Maozhong maintained a sense of solidarity with these Goguryeo diaspora members and cooperated with them.
