드라마 <더 글로리>의 지지자 관계와 그 함의 : 도덕감정과 공감장 이론을 중심으로

This study aims to analyze the dynamics and significance of supporter relationships in the Netflix drama <The Glory>. The series centers on Moon Dong-eun, a victim of school violence, who seeks revenge against her perpetrators. While the drama has been widely praised for its realistic portrayal of social and moral corruption, this paper identifies an underlying narrative of empathy-based relationship formation that coexists with the revenge plot, thereby broadening the interpretive scope of the work. The perpetrators in The Glory possess greater economic and social capital than the victim, creating a pronounced asymmetry of power. The formation of supporter relationships serves as a counterforce to this imbalance, providing the physical and emotional foundation that enables Moon Dong-eun’s revenge. To examine this structure, the analysis draws upon the concepts of Moral Emotions and the Sympathetic Field. Moral emotions are defined as “emotions that manifest imagination and empathy toward others,” encompassing prudence, care, shame, contempt, and anger that emerge when individuals perceive themselves and others through the perspective of a third party. The sympathetic field, in turn, is an analytical and critical framework that captures the internal motivations of human actions within an affective dimension, emphasizing emotional elements as the core foundation of communal formation. The supporter relationships depicted in The Glory are fundamentally grounded in moral emotions and exhibit the characteristics of a sympathetic field. Consequently, the emotional resonance evoked by the drama extends beyond the exhilaration of revenge to encompass the fulfillment derived from empathy and solidarity. Furthermore, by inviting viewers to engage with the characters’ acts of empathetic connection, The Glory reveals its potential as a work that embodies Martha Nussbaum’s concept of Poetic Justice.
