Dīpavaṃsa Manuscripts within the Talpat Tradition (1)

초록

The tradition of Palm-leaf manuscript had already been established since BCE. within the Buddhist countries. This tradition, in Sri Lanka, has been inherited and developed under the name of Talpat, which means the leaves of the Palm-leaf manuscript. The manuscripts have been produced and transmitted over the centuries at the Colombo National Museum Library or the temples across Sri Lankan provinces, some of which have been lost or leaked abroad. This article introduces the Sri Lankan Talpat tradition, which has not been dealt with in Korean academia so far. It scrutinizes the method of catalog and the available manuscripts by examining the representative Manuscript Catalogs. Further, it analyzes the structure and characteristics of the Palm leaf manuscript using specific text available as a sample. The Dipavamsa, which is the oldest historical text among the extant Buddhist source, is the text as this case study. In 1879, Hermann Oldenberg published the critical edition of the text based on 11 manuscripts transcribed in the Burmese and Sinhalese script. Since then, however, there has been no further critical comparative research on a number of additional manuscripts that Oldenberg could not review. In response, the article analyzes the seven available manuscripts of the Colombo National Museum Library Catalog No. 1849, 1850, 1851, and K.D. Somadasa Catalog No. 365, 435, 512 and 665 to examine the characteristics of Talpat tradition in Sri Lanka.
