Visual and Moral Expression Characteristics by Anthropomorphism Stages of Animal Characters in the Webtoon <Tiger Brothers>

초록

This study analyzes 10 animal characters across 19 character states in the webtoon <Tiger Brothers> (Seasons 1-2, ep. 1-335) using a dual coding system that extends Lee's (2009) six-stage visual anthropomorphism model to encompass moral anthropomorphism (visual items V1-V5; moral items M1-M3), coded by three independent coders (Fleiss' ê=.850). Visual scores increased systematically across stages, validating the six-stage model for webtoon media. Moral anthropomorphism scores, however, showed an inverse pattern—higher in lower visual stages (Stages 1-2: M=5.22) than in higher ones (Stages 5-6: M=4.68)—indicating that moral anthropomorphism operates independently of visual stage. Variable-type characters showed large visual shifts with minimal change in moral anthropomorphism across form transitions, while narrative-growth characters demonstrated moral development without visual advancement. These findings suggest that anthropomorphism analysis should extend beyond visual resemblance to include moral anthropomorphism as an independent dimension, especially in long- form narrative media.
