초록
This study utilized panel data collected from 2017 to 2021 to conduct an in-depth analysis of the impact of income inequality on crime rates in metropolitan areas of South Korea. The dependent variable was the number of crimes per thousand people, based on data provided by the National Police Agency. Independent variables included a comprehensive range of demographic and economic factors, encompassing various socio-economic factors. The analysis, which accounted for fixed effects related to time and region, revealed that income inequality indicators had a statistically significant positive correlation with crime rates across all models. This suggests that regions with higher levels of income inequality are more likely to experience higher crime rates. Additionally, average disposable income showed a statistically significant negative relationship with crime rates, indicating that higher income levels are associated with lower crime rates. Population density also exhibited a statistically significant negative relationship with crime rates, implying that areas with lower population density may have relatively higher crime rates. Divorce rates were found to have a statistically significant positive relationship with crime rates in some models. These findings suggest that policy interventions aimed at reducing income inequality, enhancing economic stability, strengthening infrastructure, and ensuring family stability can play a crucial role in reducing crime rates.
