Translation and Importation of ‘Folklore’
  • 남근우

초록

The ‘folklore’ of the thesis refers both to a specific cultural idea as an object and to the field of knowledge that explores it. Currently, in the East Asian Chinese character culture area, the former (民俗) (folk) and the latter (民俗學) (folkloristics) are mainly used as the translations. In this article, we first look at how the word ‘folklore’, which can be considered the origin of ‘folklore(folkloristics),’ was born in England and spread to neighboring regions, and the situation before it was brought to East Asia. Next, I summarized the process by which these British terms and concepts were brought to East Asia and translated. In addition, I examined the process by which the term ‘folk(folkloristics)’ came from imperial Japan to colonial Chosun and established itself as a field of modern knowledge production and social practice. In the case of Korean folkloristics, although the fundamental issues surrounding the acceptance of this basic concept were raised early in the public sphere of academic conferences, there has been no in-depth discussion until now.
