Evaluation of Water Permeability and Urea Removal Performance in PS Hollow Fiber–Based Lab-scale Hemodialysis Modules with PET Spacer Yarns

In this study, a lab-scale hemodialysis system was constructed, and five types of lab-scale hemodialysis modules with polysulfone (PS) hollow fiber membranes and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-based mono/multi spacer yarns were fabricated to evaluate the influence of spacers on module performance. While the module with only PS hollow fibers show the highest performance in the water permeability test, the other modules with various spacers shows lower performance due to the reduced effective membrane surface area. However, urea removal experiments demonstrated hemodialysis performance differences depending on the presence and type of spacer, which confirmed that spacers contribute to more uniform shell-side flow and reduced diffusive mass-transfer resistance. Despite having a lower membrane surface area, the module containing 10 wt%mono spacer yarn achieved a urea removal rate of approximately 67.99% after 3 h of dialysis. This represents an improvement of about 5.24% compared with the module without spacers (62.75%).
