The Individual as the Subject of Cognition From the Meeting between John Stuart Mill‘s Discussions on Epistemology and the Socratic Dialogue

초록

The reason why John Stuart Mill emphasizes both the liberty of the expression of opinion and the liberty of discussion is for the liberty of knowing, resulting in the subject of cognition. These discussions are closely related with the import of individuality. By developing the individuality with which human being can judge and choose their own plan of life by themselves, human beings can regain the loss of the subject of cognition, resulting from the conformity to others’ opinion which was prevalent at 19th in England. By making comparison of their own interpretations of their experiences as well as of a certain agenda with other peoples’ interpretations, they can enhance their own intellectual capabilities through the Socratic dialogue. Even if discussions are open to every body, there are chances of coercing minors to follow the opinions of majority implicitly. Mill considers the Socratic dialogue as the mechanism to secure the discussion order by which every one participates in discussions with equal as well as comes out of their own cage of cognition.
