초록

This study analyzes the various forms and effects of charade techniques as presented in the Netflix original series The Queen’s Gambit, categorizing them according to their intended functions. Charade techniques play a crucial role in human communication, as they enable the transmission of meaning, emotion, and intention without the use of spoken or written language. In film production, exploring the psychological dimensions of characters constitutes a vital component of storytelling, and gestures, facial expressions, and symbolic elements that convey emotions and thoughts can serve as highly effective expressive tools in achieving this aim. Such techniques offer deeper insight into characters’ internal states that are difficult to articulate explicitly, and through indirect expression via symbols and metaphors, audiences are able to empathize with characters and gain a more profound understanding of their inner lives. Within the cinematic domain, nonverbal expression plays a significant role in eliciting deep emotional responses, strengthening narrative structure, establishing a universal language, and symbolizing implicit meanings. A more detailed classification of diverse charade techniques can contribute to the enhancement of symbolic nonverbal expression and elevate the aesthetic completeness of a work. By recognizing the importance of nonverbal expression through charade techniques, this study emphasizes that cinematic nonverbal communication—ranging from innovative visual symbolism to new and diverse cinematographic approaches that transcend the limitations of language—plays a critical role in engaging audiences and fostering emotional resonance.
