이상(李箱) 수필에 나타나는 병원 체험: 생명정치적 시선과 식민지의 신체들

초록

This paper analyzes the hospital experiences that appears in Lee Sang's essay 「The Miscellaneous Notes About Autumn Lamp (秋燈雜筆)」 and 「After Bed (病床以後)」 in connection with modernity. Until now, the topic of tuberculosis has been considered as a significant keyword to understand Lee Sang’s life and works. However, it is necessary to focus more on the fact that the tuberculosis was a disease that was identified by the knowledge of Western medicine. New languages represented by ‘tuberculosis’ reconstruct the way how to recognizes human body in line with the ‘modern’ paradigm. However, because these medical diagnoses are made from perspective of others, patients in colony are at risk of being alienated from the political forces surrounding their own bodies. In 「The Miscellaneous Notes About Autumn Lamp (秋燈雜筆), Lee Sang records the shame of watching the prisoner, and further mentions the displeasure of the experience that became a spectacle when he himself was admitted to the hospital. From this, it implies that modern medicine and hospitals should treat patients' bodies humanely. In 「After Bed (病床以後)」, this perspective develops into a concern about what kind of life the patient can hope for in the double plight of disease and alienation. Here, we tried to examine the modern hospital experiences in the above essay works and analyze how criticism on biopolitics and the search for the life patients can dream of appear.
