김태흡의 기행문 <남유구도예찬> 독해 - 백양사 여정을 중심으로

초록

Among the domestic and international travelogues published in modern Buddhist magazines, the writings of Park Han-young, Lee Young-jae, Kim Tae-heup, and Baek Yang-hwan-min are noteworthy. Although academic interest in these travelogues has recently been growing, there appears to be no research that has examined the content of Kim Tae-heup's travelogue in detail. This paper aims to appreciate Kim Tae-heup's travelogue of temples in the Honam region from a literary critical perspective and to derive its significance in the history of Buddhist culture. Bulgyosa (President Kwon Sang-ro), the publisher of Bulgyo , selected Kim Tae-heup as a reporter in May and June 1928, along with Baek Seong-uk, Kim Beop-rin, Yu Yeop, Bang In-geun, and Kim Il-yeop; subsequently, literary works such as novels and plays occupied a significant portion of the magazine's pages. However, in 1929, all other employees resigned, leaving only Kim Tae-heup, and the pages were filled with travelogues instead of novels and plays. Kim Tae-heup's <In Praise of the Journey of Seeking the Way to the Southern Route> holds historical significance as a travelogue that emerged during this very period. This work is valuable as reportage literature that provides a detailed account of the traditions of mountain Buddhism, rather than the urban Buddhism that had garnered media attention at the time. Furthermore, it captures the process of Kim Tae-heup's personal Zen experience and vividly records his interactions with intellectuals such as Jeong In-bo and Lee Geon-bang. It has been evaluated as a text of historical value in the history of Buddhist culture, as it confirms the formation and transformation of the author's personal consciousness and the immediacy of Buddhist culture.
