A study on Compliment speech act strategies of Chinese Learmers: Focus on KSL and KFL Learners

초록

This study investigates the differences in compliment speech strategies between native Korean speakers(KNS) and learners of Korean as a Second Language(KSL) and Korean as a Foreign Language(KFL). To achieve this objective, a written DCT was conducted with 30 participants from each of the KNS, KSL, and KFL groups. The results confirmed that direct compliment was the most frequently used strategy across all three groups, regardless of the compliment topic or social variables. The KSL group showed similar patterns to the KNS group in the compliment topic of ability and appearance, but showed differences in the topic of personality. Analysis of compliment strategies by topic showed that the KNS group employed additional strategies such as personal opinion, questioning information, and joking more frequently, whereas the KSL and KFL groups showed lower usage rates of these strategies. Regarding intimacy, the KSL group demonstrated tendencies closer to the KNS group. In terms of social variables, the KNS group used questioning information to express politeness, while learners more commonly relied on personal opinions. These findings suggest that learners find it difficult to use questioning information strategy, but it easier to use strategies based on personal emotions.
