코로나19 사태 이후 캄보디아 은행의 경영성과 결정요인 분석

What Determines the Performance of Banks in Cambodia in the Post Covid-19 Period

초록

This paper analyzes the key factors (including ownership) that influence the performance of commercial banks in Cambodia after the COVID-19 event. First, the paper finds evidence that the higher the loan proportion is, the sound the bank asset is. Given that the loan-to-value ratio starts increasing two or three years after the loan size has shrunk, it remains to be seen whether asset quality will be deteriorated in the near future. Second, the higher the proportion of loans and the lower the proportion of investment in safe assets, the higher the profitability. When asset quality is aggravated, then the result will be reserved. Next, the asset quality and profitability of banks with more than 50% foreign ownership were found to be better than those of other banks, and in the case of pure foreign banks, the profitability was not differentiated from other banks. Lastly, Korean banks did not aggressively increase lending despite the monetary easing policy after the COVID-19 outbreak, and as a result, their asset quality was better than other banks. The results of this study show that the performance of Cambodian banks after the COVID-19 incident is quite heterogeneous, and if loan defaults become a reality, the gap in performance between good and bad banks is expected to widen further, and the government had better set up a strategy to keep the banking industry safe and sound.
