From Korea’s liberation in 1945 until the early 1960s, Buddhist magazines were a valuable medium for reporting and populariz- ing academic achievements. Before the early 1960s-when aca- demic societies for Buddhism and related studies were estab- lished, and specialized academic journals began to be published by various university research institutes-Buddhist magazines enjoyed a near monopoly as a medium for Buddhist studies and popularization. And as the primary source for under- standing trends in the Buddhist community after liberation, Buddhist magazines still maintain value as academic resources. However, research on Buddhist history after liberation has not yet progressed in earnest, and accordingly, although there have been references about the total volume and content of Buddhist magazines by some papers, full-scale research on the magazines themselves is still lacking. The magazine Bulgyo (lit. Buddhi- sm)-which was founded during the Japanese colonial period and went through several cycles of publication, ceasing pub- lication, resuming publication, reissuing, and re-launch- ing-initially served as an organizational magazine which repre- sented all divisions of Korean Buddhism. And since 1970, it has served as a monthly organizational magazine for the Taego Order of Korean Buddhism. Bulgyo is subtitled “The traditional magazine of the meditative and doctrinal schools since 1924,” and its 757th issue was pub- lished in December 2024. However, in spite of this respectable lineage, no 100-year history of Bulgyo exists in any records inside or outside the magazine, nor in any academic research. This paper was written to organize the genealogy of how Bulgyo, founded in 1924, evolved into the monthly Bulgyo currently published by the Taego Order. Of course, all Buddhist magazines published in Korea are the common heritage of Korean Buddhism. However, it is also meaningful to organize the past according to the genealogical consciousness currently shown in the Taego Order’s magazine.
