Effects of Warehouse Management System(WMS) Adoption in Agri-food Logistics: A Focus on the Hansalim Logistics Center

In Korea’s agri-food distribution sector, increasing diversification of consumer orders, rising demand for fresh-food logistics, and growing supply-chain complexity have accelerated the transition from a traditional trans-shipment center(TC) model to a distribution center(DC) model. As this functional shift progresses, the importance of logistics information systems has become increasingly evident. A Warehouse Management System(WMS) can enhance the efficiency and accuracy of logistics operations by standardizing complex workflows and ensuring information accuracy and real-time visibility.This study analyzes the performance of Warehouse Management System(WMS) implementation at the Hansalim distribution center using three complementary approaches. First, a qualitative assessment of managers’ and practitioners’ perceptions indicates substantial improvements in efficiency, accuracy, and convenience across core logistics processes such as receiving and inventory management. Second, an analysis of key performance indicators(KPIs) shows that data-driven decision-making(DDDM) has been strengthened through the utilization of real-time receiving, inventory, and shipping information generated within the system. Third, a quantitative analysis of changes in major indicators—including stockout rate, labeling errors, producer-side transportation costs, printing costs, and inventory accuracy—demonstrates an annual cost-reduction effect of approximately KRW 670 million, suggesting that the investment can be recovered within two years of Warehouse Management System(WMS) adoption. This research contributes to the literature by extending studies on logistics functions and information systems—previously centered on wholesale markets and Agricultural Products Processing Centers(APC)—to agri-food distribution centers, and by expanding Warehouse Management System(WMS)-related research from manufacturing and logistics sectors into the agri-food domain. Building on the findings of this study, future empirical research is needed to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of logistics information systems and equipment in various public-sector agri-food distribution centers.
