세계일화(世界一花), 숭산을 통해 본 수덕사 선불교 전통 구현과 디아스포라
초록
The tradition of Korean Seon Buddhism was established by Gyeong Heo and Man Gong, with their teachings being firmly rooted in Sudeoksa Temple. Seung Sahn, who moved to the United States in 1972, spread Korean Seon Buddhism and raised numerous disciples. Research on Seung Sahn can be largely summarized into two categories: one focuses on his Seon philosophy, while the other examines the outcomes of his overseas missionary activities. This paper aims to explore whether the diaspora can function as a mechanism to overcome the limitations of a single religious tradition and expand the cultural horizons of both the homeland and the local communities through communication and integration. I propose viewing the diaspora as a way to communicate across boundaries, enabling ideas to take root and spread. In this context, I will discuss Seung Sahn Haeng Won (1927-2004), who introduced traditional Korean Seon Buddhism to the world. First, we will examine the origin of Seung Sahn’s Seon Buddhism thought and explore the Seon Buddhism tradition of Sudeoksa Temple through the idea of ‘The Whole World is a Single Flower’ (世界一花), which was passed down from Gyeong Heo to Man Gong, along with the saying “only don’t know” from Go Bong, and the practice of koan meditation within Seon thought. Second, we will examine how the teachings of “The Whole World is a Single Flower” shaped Seung Sahn’s life. Through this, we will examine his efforts to approach, inherit, and develop the Seon Buddhism tradition of Sudeoksa Temple. Third, we will examine Seung Sahn’s missionary activities, which reveal a new dimension of diaspora. This new aspect arises from the spirit of Seon Buddhism taking root across boundaries through communication and fusion, and from the practice of Seon Buddhism permeating the hearts and lives of diverse people. The aspect of the succession of Seonbeop of Sudeoksa Temple, which inherited the tradition of Korean Seon Buddhism through Seung Sahn, will allow us to see the direction of life toward the common good of humanity, which transcends races, genders, and cultural spheres. Furthermore, it will be able to open up new horizons for diaspora. Through this study, we hope to contribute to the spread of research and discussion on religion and diaspora, highlighting how the practice of freedom and equality, alongside the spread of Korean traditional culture, can impact the world.
